The city has a medieval architecture due to its construction in the 8th century, but much of that was lost in the 2nd world war, when 80% of it was destroyed. Although some remnants of the old landmarks can still be seen, Dunkerque is part of the post war mid fifties architectural style, a manner which is slowly starting to be appreciated.

Dunkerque isn’t so popular with events. There is although a big carnival each year around the end of January and beginning of February which brings most of the city locals to the center of town where a parade is held.
